Govt condemns death of Patrick Karegeya

Security cluster says no stone will be left unturned in bringing to justice those responsible

On 1 January 2014, the former Director of the Rwandan External Intelligence Service, Colonel Patrick Karegyeya, was found dead in his Michelangelo Towers Hotel room in Sandton. Colonel Karegyeya was a refugee from Rwanda since 2007.
The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster of the Government of the Republic of South Africa is saddened by the untimely death of Colonel Patrick Karegyeya and passes condolences to his wife and children.
The initial forensic investigations by the South African Police Service indicate that there were signs of a scuffle and a bloody curtain cord and towel which were in a safe in his room. The Government condemns this incidence in the strongest terms and would ensure that no stone is left unturned in tracking and bringing to justice those involved in this criminal act.
To this end, it has called upon the responsible officials to expedite the investigation into this incidence and for the Criminal Justice System to bring those responsible to account. Incidence such as this must have the requisite consequences to deter future would be wrong doers and should not be tolerated under any circumstances.
