Ban, UNSC strongly condemn killing of Rwandan UNAMID peacekeeper

NEW YORK, May 25 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the
Security Council late Saturday strongly condemned the killing of a
Rwandan peacekeeper and injuring of three others belonging to the
African Union-UN Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), and urged the
Sudanese Government to investigate the incident and bring the
perpetrators to justice.
The incident took place early Saturday in the day in Kabkabiya, North
Darfur, following a failed mediation attempt between two groups of
armed men, believed to be Arab and Fur tribesmen.
In separate press statements, Ban and the Council expressed their
condolences to the victim's family, the Rwandan Government and UNAMID;
reiterated their full support for the mission; and called on all
parties in Darfur to cooperate fully with it. Ban said in a recent
report to the council that inter-communal violence has increased in
the western region of Sudan. Consequently, The council revised the
mission's mandate last month to include, among other tasks, mediation
between the government and non-signatory armed movements, and provide
measures to address the root causes of the conflict. Established in
2007, UNAMID has some 20,000 troops and international civilian
personnel, and suffered so far some 130 fatalities. (end) sj.sd
