During the 1994 genocide, Rwandan women were subjected to widespread
and unrelenting sexual violence from members of the Hutu militia
groups known as the Interahamwe. Among survivors, those who are most
isolated are women who gave birth to children as a result of being
raped. An estimated 20,000 children were conceived during the
genocide, and many of their mothers contracted HIV. Many were forced
to witness the murder of their families. "You alone are allowed to
live,' some were told, "so that you will die of sadness."

Photojournalist Jonathan Torgovnik spent two years tracking down,
photographing and interviewing these women and their children. When
the story ran in the Telegraph magazine in 2007, the generosity of our
readers raised more than $130,000 and helped found the charity
Foundation Rwanda. This year Torgovnik returned to Rwanda to document
how far the women have come since.
