Rwandans press on with charges of mass rape by French army

In France, many people still remember the country's role in the
Rwandan genocide of 19-94. Now a rally in Paris demands justice in a
court case which accuses French soldiers of committing widespread rape
against the Rwandan refugees they were meant to protect. Press TV's
Ramin Mazaheri has more from Paris.
FRANCE RWANDA CASE
Two decades after the United Nations authorized France's Operation
Turquoise in Rwanda, the French army is being sued for alleged mass
rapes which constitute crimes against humanity. The complaint charges
that at French-run refugee camps soldiers singled out Tutsi women,
genocide survivors no less, and raped them repeatedly.
Both the victims and the soldiers have not been publicly identified,
but the women have already testified in a battle for justice which has
dragged on for 10 years and is still in the justice system. France's
role during the genocidal '100 Days of Hell' in 1994 is still
officially denied by Paris, but many historians agree that France
trained the militias which carried out the killings, that French
troops failed to intervene once the killings began, and then that they
even aided the escape of Hutu leaders. In the Central African Republic
there have been mass protests against the French army, who are again
accused of failing to deliver on promises of stability. French troops
have failed to prevent a mass exodus of the CAR's Muslim population,
who noted that there was no sectarian bloodshed before France's
trooped arrived last fall. Twenty years after the Rwandan genocide,
many in France want to forget it ever happened, but others are
fighting to prevent more victims from France's so-called "humanitarian
interventions".
