Smartphones getting really social

Time to take a look at Fairphone. What is it? It's a socially
conscious smartphone aimed at raising awareness among consumers and
carriers on the issue of conflict minerals in mobile devices. They're
Androidpowered and they are subject to social values and open design
as a means of influencing fairer sourcing and production practices.
Buyers are required to prepay for their phones, which means they help
fund the production of the device itself.
Fairphone doesn't get involved in the design process directly, and
instead picked up an existing smartphone model from the maker, Chinese
manufacturer GuoHong. Fairphone helped on the supply side and insisted
that conflict-free tin and tantalum from Congolese mines be used in
production.
In May last year, Fairphone rolled out a crowdfunding campaign to
finance the production of the first Fairphone models, with the initial
batch of 25,000 devices selling out in six months. The company is now
taking orders for its second batch of 35,000 Fairphones – but be
warned, the waiting list is 50,000 people strong.
Plus all this sounds like good news for those consumers who are
getting tired of the upgrade and find the latest flagship smartphones
overshooting their needs.
Fairphone's doing more than just making phones now. In China, the
social enterprise is establishing a Worker Welfare Fund at their
production facility to improve working conditions, work/life balance
and worker representation. It works with the ConflictFree Tin
Initiative and Solutions for Hope to source traceable, conflictfree
minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo . It also works with
Closing the Loop to eclaim ewaste from Ghana and transport it to
Belgium for safe recycling.
