DR Congo has highest rates of sexual violence

Central and southern African states have bad records for safeguarding women

RESEARCH HAS revealed that the Democratic Republic of Congo has the
highest rates of sexual violence.

In a recent report in The Lance journal, research, which looked at the
prevalence of non-partner sexual violence in 56 countries, suggests
that the global picture varies widely.

Figures showed that sexual violence rates were highest in countries in
central and southern sub-Saharan African states including Congo,
Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. It was also high in New Zealand
and Austrailia.

Countries in North Africa, the Middle East and south Asia reported the
lowest rates.

The Lance report also revealed that worldwide, over seven percent of
women aged 15 or older have reported being sexually assaulted by
someone other than their intimate partner.
