Exiled Rwandan journalist brother feared kidnapped in Kampala

A brother of Rwandan exiled journalist has disappeared and his relatives say he was kidnapped by men in Uganda police uniform.

Mr Andrew Muhanguzi and his family had fled Rwanda to Uganda in 2012, following alleged harassment by Rwanda government because of his brother John Bosco Gasasira, whose online newspaper, Umuvugizi, publishes stories critical to Rwanda. Mr Gasasira is living in exile after attempts to assassinate him.

Mr Muhanguzi's brother, Fred Asiimwe told Saturday Monitor he (Muhanguzi) was kidnapped on February 16 by two men in police uniform outside their home in Kampala.

After the kidnap, the family says they contacted the Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander, Mr Andrew Felix Kaweesi, who promised to investigate the alleged kidnap.

When contacted on the matter, yesterday, Mr Kawesi said: "It is true I was contacted by the family members but I lost their contact. We checked with all our units, we don't have that person in our custody."

The Rwandan Ambassador in Uganda, Maj Gen Frank Mugambagye, said he was not aware of the kidnap of the Rwandan refugee.

The senior refugee protection officer in the Office of the Prime Minister, Mr Douglas Asiimwe, confirmed the disappearance of Mr Muhanguzi. "The family has reported the disappearance of Mr Muhanguzi. We are engaging police to see that the matter is thoroughly investigated," he said.
