SA may sever all diplomatic ties with Rwanda

Cape Town - South Africa is reportedly planning to sever all
diplomatic ties with Rwanda within 72 hours, as relations between the
two countries get worse following the expulsion of three Rwandan
diplomats from the country.

South Africa expelled the three Rwandan diplomats it linked to a raid
by gunmen on a dissident exiled former Rwandan army chief Faustin
Kayumba Nyamwasageneral's home in Johannesburg. In retaliation, Rwanda
ordered out six South African envoys.

This comes a few months after former Rwandan spy chief Patrick
Karegeya was found strangled in a Sandton hotel.

According to the Daily Maverick, an official within the department of
international relations (Dirco) said SA would not stand by and watch
people being "killed on our soil by another government, just because
we happen to be opposed to a sitting regime".

The official said the freeze in relations was likely to continue for
as long as President Paul Kagame remained in office.

Rwanda has since accused South Africa of harbouring terrorists.

Meanwhile, according to an SABC report, the South African government
was under pressure to clarify the diplomatic row, with the Democratic
Alliance (DA) urging Minister
Maite Nkoana-Mashabane
to urgently address Parliament on the issue.

Dirco has refused to comment on the matter but the DA's Justus de
Goede believes the public deserves an explanation, the report said.
